How it all got started.
Stuck behind the computer all day in 8th Grade, Fall of 2020, right in the midst of the pandemic. A staff help at my Dads office discussed with my him about how he needs help in teaching his 6th grade son science concepts. He said that he could not understand the course material in english and in turn was struggling to teach his son.
Upon hearing this I volunteered my services as I always liked teaching my younger siblings science and Maths. As I worked virtually with this kid one thing became very apparent that many immigrant students struggled with science concepts. Due to the language barrier, their parents could not give them the help they needed in understanding science and Maths. I started to make models and notes in this kids native language. Not realizing the challenge of translating words to English as different grammar rules looked completely different. This kids science knowledge was far below his real intellectual abilities. He told us that his last school was a half burned down building with no windows in Kabul. As the lockdown continued many kids from the same family approached me for help in Science and Math concepts. One thing was obvious to me from interacting with the refugee kids that they never got a chance to do an actual science experiment.
They had never attended a robotics camp, never tried their hands on building a solar car or even something simple like a popsicle sticks bridge.
These kids deserve a chance to experience a STEP camp where they can get their hands on science experiment materials and build something.
The Dental Guidelines Flyer
RefugeeYAC founder Hamza Farhan created the Dental Hygiene guideline flyer. This Flyer was translated in Dari, Urdu and English. The objective was to provide Dental care Hygiene instructions to Refugee kids who had just landed in US and did not have proper health or dental care insurance. The flyer guidelines also had pictures to go with the instructions to make it easier for kids to follow routine dental care and dental hygiene.
